Hollywood could not have choreographed a more beautiful, dramatic entrance than the one made by Jennifer Hsu in the entryway of the Wheatleigh Hotel. Votive candles lit the outside curve of the marble staircase as Jennifer, flanked by her parents, walked down. Calm, smiling, and resplendent in a cream gown with a lace bodice and green satin sash, Jennifer looked as though there was no other place on earth, or time, than this crystal moment.

Guests had all been greeted with warm apple cider to chase off the November chill. John Todd’s good friend, Dan Gien was playing the piano as everyone gathered in the lobby. The classic Italianate lines of the marble entryway were softened by the rich glow of candlelight, and the warmth of autumnal colors. Two huge planters filled with leaves stood in front of the French glass doors overlooking the patio and gardens. The sun’s setting rays lit the leaves and the entire room with spectacular bursts of fiery reds, yellows and oranges.

John and Jennifer wrote their own vows, and the ceremony was performed by Justice of the Peace Eva Sheridan. Two year old Alex was the proud ringbearer. The reception began with a cocktail hour in the solarium dining room, and guests were all seated for dinner at tables named for small towns surrounding Lenox, Massachusetts. John and Jennifer’s first dance was “Up on the Roof” by Carole King, and Jennifer’s special dance with her father was to “Shelter in the Rain” by Stevie Wonder.

Earlier, in the afternoon of their wedding day, John and Jennifer had gone running together on the hotel’s grounds. Even in the full splendor of the evening they radiated a calm happiness and that enveloped everyone. Their wedding will be remembered in warm, autumn jewel tones.
