Wedding Gowns Inspired by Classic Beauties

Bridal Gown by Romona Keveza (BNN) When it comes to designing the perfect bridal gown, there are those designers whose aesthetic is not influenced by the abundance of fashion trends. Instead, they look to shapes and silhouettes favored by women of superb taste and style.

Designer Romona Keveza’s collections, for example, have included gowns inspired by some of the most celebrated royal, society, and movie-star beauties of the 20th century, and styles worn at their famous weddings. Keveza's dresses, known for their clean, simple, almost architecturally precise lines, are seen by many as the epitome of modern design.

The Romona Keveza collection burst on to the scene seven years ago when the designer was asked to contribute gowns to be photographed for Legendary Brides (HarperCollins, 2000) authored by Letitia Baldridge, who served as Jacqueline Kennedy’s White House social secretary. In her superbly illustrated book, Baldridge, a leading expert on etiquette and manners, chronicled the weddings of famous brides of the last century.

Intrigued by the Baldridge book, Keveza’s inspirations emerged from her fascination with the fashion tastes of some of the world's most memorable brides, among them Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis; Princess Grace of Monaco; Diana, Princess of Wales; Princesses Caroline and Stephanie of Monaco; and Carolyn Bessette Kennedy. "I look to these incredible women of style noting that the designs they wore are as striking today as they were on their wedding day," Romona explains.

Monica Hickey, the noted wedding authority who has presided over some of the most prestigious bridal salons in New York such as those at Bergdorf Goodman, Henri Bendel, and Saks Fifth Avenue and Kleinfeld describes Keveza this way: "Romona creates her elegant bridal collections taking inspiration from the past and incorporating exquisite designs for today's fashionable bride."

One of the designer’s favorite bridal collections presents the glamour of classic Hollywood and those extraordinary goddesses of the silver screen. Evoking the styles of women such as Marlene Dietrich, Lauren Bacall, Sophia Loren, Elizabeth Taylor, and Audrey Hepburn, the collection is a tribute to the allure of luxury fabrics combined with stunning design.

Working from New York, Romona continues to broaden her vision and take her bridal designs to new levels of form and function.  A few seasons ago she launched her Legends Collection, a group of separates allowing brides to create a unique wedding-day look--and at the same time create their own individual legend.
