Costa Rica | Latin America

For many couples, the lure of Costa Rica is hard to resist - a country rated "best adventure destination" and "top value" by bridal publications is sure to be the ideal setting for those who love the outdoors, exotic locations and delightful fauna and flora.

A destination wedding in Costa Rica could include everything from witnessing volcanic eruptions to gliding underneath a rainforest canopy. With 25% of the country devoted to environmentally protected areas, including national parks, reserves, refuges, marine sanctuaries and more, wedding parties can enjoy a wonderfully diverse spectrum of plant & animal life, with 857 species of birds and 9,000 species of plants, including a dizzying 1,200 types of orchids alone!

Visiting a nation with a 96% literacy rate also has its draw, and Costa Rican culture has a strong heritage of family traditions, gracious hospitality and civil tolerance.

Top Ten Reasons to Plan a Wedding in Costa Rica

Costa Rica is a gorgeous destination. Imagine yourself at a mountaintop villa in a light, romantic dress, with orchids in your hair, on a warm, tropical evening, the air scented with flowers.  You walk through a stone arch onto a stone terrace where a Spanish fountain provides a calming babble in the background. You make your way to your groom’s side where you both have an awe-inspiring view of an island-studded deep blue sea.  After the ceremony your friends toast to your happiness as the sun sets and the stars and moon rise over the azure sea. You dine on delicious, fresh fish flavored with cilantro, lemon and lime, and afterwards the celebration and dancing begins to the beat of Latin music…

Tips for Planning a Wedding in Costa Rica

Tips for Planning a Wedding in Costa Rica

1. Make sure you plan your wedding during the dry season—December through April.  If you go in September or October, chances are you’ll have a soggy wedding; rain can be very heavy during the  wet, or “green” season.

2. Plan on orchids...it would be a shame not to incorporate them since they are so unique to the area. Another gorgeous flower in Costa Rica is the Alamanda, which I have seen in yellow and purple.

Costa Rica | Electricity

The electrical current in Central America is 110 volts (AC). Costa Rica has standard North American two-prong outlets. Adapters are required for three-prong plugs, which are not common in Costa Rica. If your appliances are dual-voltage, you'll need only an adapter. If they aren't, use a 220-volt to 110-volt transformer.

"Pura Vida" - Costa Rica

Visit Costa Rica

The phrase "Pura Vida" (literally "pure life") is a ubiquitous motto in Costa Rica.

It encapsulates the pervading ideology of living in peace in a calm, unclustered manner appreciating life surrounded by nature, family and friends. As a freelance event-and-wedding coordinator, I have had many opportunities to participate in the planning of local wedding celebrations. Recently, however, I had the chance to assist Lisa Light, New York's premier destination wedding planner, in producing a wedding in Costa Rica for Style Network's Married Away show. Not only would we be coordinating a wedding in an exotic setting, we had just three days to accomplish it. The bride was very organized, a planner herself, but there were still many last minute tasks to be finalized including site selection at the resort, the welcome party and gifts, design of the reception space, and other details.

Costa Rica | Tipping

Restaurants generally add 10% service charge for a tip. Unusually good service may suggest an additional couple of dollars. Taxi drivers are not usually tipped. Tour guides are generally tipped anywhere from $3 to $20. Hotel maids and tour drivers are sometimes tipped: porters and bellhops get around 75 cents per bag. Costa Ricans generally do not tip, so it is entirely up to you and dependant on the level of service received.

Costa Rica | Planning Notes

Time Required:

Because the process is so complicated I suggest you get started as soon as you can and no later than 6 weeks before the wedding trip.

Where and How:

  1. Contact the destination of your choice to determine how much assistance will be provided by their wedding planning staff. If it is limited, we suggest contacting one of the lawyers recommended by the US Embassy in Costa Rica. A list of lawyers who can help make sure you obtain the proper documentation, and who can also serve as wedding officiants, is available through the US Embassy web site at www.usembassy.or.cr. Alternately, many of the wedding services provided by our hotels and destinations will help couples fulfill these legal requirements
