Destination Puerto Rico
Destination | Puerto Rico
The 272 mile long Puerto Rican coastline harbors hundreds of endless selections for a wedding couple looking for a destination wedding. This "Island of Enchantment" marries seclusion with sophistication, whether your pleasure is the old-world charm of Old San Juan, bustling nightlife, or exploring the world's largest underground river.
The island itself is teeming with beauty and vitality, and her perpetual summer encourages creative engagement. Natural attractions include tropical rainforests, botanical gardens, and sun-drenched beaches. In the 28,000 acre Caribbean National Forest (El Yunque) you will discover 100 f. high trees and dramatic mountain ranges.
Tennis, golf, and windsailing are but a few of the national pastimes. Both diving and snorkeling are also popular as is surfing in Rincon. The average ocean water temperature is 81 F and underwater visibility ranges from 60-10 feet. Gambol in a park or gamble at any number of extravagant casinos, then spend your winnings at the bustling Plaza Las Americas and Condado shopping areas.
One of the most unique attractions in Puerto Rico are the bioluminescent bays in Fajardo and on the island of Vieques. I had the priviledge of leading a wedding group on a bioluminescent bay tour in Fajardo and it was an experience of a lifetime. The tour begins at dusk. Guests are fitted with life preservers, paddles and kayaks. Once everyone is ready, the group paddles through a mangrove river of sorts until you reach a giant, protected bay. By now it is almost dark so you do not have to wait long before the bioluminescence begins to glow when you touch the water with you toes or fingers. It looks like you have diamonds all over your hands. And as if that is not magical enough, you return through the mangrove paddling in the velvet darkness with the stars overhead. It is a terrific bonding experience for your guests and something they will not soon forget.
Wedding venues include both historic and state-of-the-art hotels and resorts, private villas, golf resorts, haciendas and eco-resorts for the more down-to-earth couple.
The Puerto Rican people are an amalgam of Spanish, Native American, Corsican, and French. There are also many descendants of the Chinese workers who helped build the railroad, and a smearing of Scots and Irish as well.
The best time to go to Puerto Rico is from mid-December to mid-April, a time when northern weather is at its worse. Book popular resorts and destination locations months in advance. During the off-season, prices drop 20-50%.
