Destination Anguilla

Modern Bride readers recently named the magical island paradise of Anguilla one of the best destination wedding locations in the world - along with over 200,000 viewers of NBC's "Today Show Destination Wedding Contest." Located in the British West Indies, known for its gently undulating dunes, inviting terrain and beautiful, secluded beaches, the 16 mile long island is a welcome escape from civilization, a natural paradise, yet graced with fine dining, friendly people and fascinating places to explore, including caves and caverns.

And if you're lucky, you may catch a glimpse of Anguilla's legendary sea turtles. Some couples choose to wed amidst the tranquil beauty of the island, then honeymoon on one of the nearby islands - such as St. Martin or St. Bart - where they can enjoy a more cosmopolitan setting.

Design Ideas

Anguilla is home to many artists, including potters, sculptors, painters, and woodworkers. For welcome gift ideas, check out the local crafts at the Anguilla Arts and Crafts Center. You might also welcome your guests with local flowers, such as the ever-present bougainvillea and hibiscus (which would also make beautiful bouquets).

Salt, fish and lobster are some of Anguilla’s natural resources, so it is only fitting that a wedding feast feature lobster—and lots of it! In addition to lobster bisque, traditional favorites include saltfish and johnnycakes, tamarind balls, bull’s foot soup, oxtail and conch stew, sweet corn chowder, and rice and peas. Talented musicians are available throughout Anguilla, performing on everything from saxophones to steel drums.

For more island entertainment, you might include a Jumbie dancer or Mocko Jumbie performer in your festivities. The Jumbie dance, which originated in Ghana, once took place following Christian rituals, such as baptism or weddings. Mocko Jumbie, meaning “good god” or “good spirit” is the art of stilt walking, always popular at Carnavale.
